Putting Plans to Actions
One of the obvious perks from writing for Golf Digest Singapore is getting invited to play golf at many wonderful courses. You get invited to social tournaments, overseas trips and events. Through my casual observation, the people I play with can be out-of-shape and have the funkiest swings ever. But, they can still kick my but in golf, and not just marginally. I guess, with my 100-plus scores, it's not that difficult to get beaten. Obviously I feel that I can play better. So what do I do? I whine to my friends, and nothing else.
Recently, I had the chance to play nine holes with celebrity chef and the King of Grill, Robert Rainford. He picked up the game about three years ago, and just like a thick tenderloin on an uneven fire, parts of his game are still raw. But because of his competitive and perfectionist streak, he wants to get better and one day, beat his single-handicap elder brothers.
So, what does he do? He puts in constant practice at the range or golf course. Whenever he's back home in Canada, he hits his home club five times a week, waking up early morning to catch the first flight before his busy schedule kicks in.
The chance encounter with Rainford jolted me into action. I’m making a point to hit the range at least once every week, and even mapped out what I want to achieve at each session. Plus, I'm willing to invest in a coach. Recommendations and words of advice are more than welcomed. (Just hit the "Email to blogger" link located at the bottom of this page. ) Hopefully, with a bit of fine tuning, I can have some decency to talk about my scores and hopefully play better than I have.
