![]() by Ju K. Tan on 15 Nov 2008 Ernie Els is not only one of the most likeable players on the Tours but he is also one of the most gracious as well. Kudos to the South African, not only for surging into the lead at 6-under after rounds of 66 and 70, but also took some time out of his tight and tiring schedule by sharing an afternoon with children suffering from autism.
Watching Els talk to the children with respect and humour not only puts things in perspective, that despite the millions these top golfers play for, what ultimately matters is humankind, social compassion, and respect for others, no matter who they are. Els was presented with a painting done by a student from Pathlight, and he in turn signed t-shirts for the glowing children.
A "Painless" 2008 For Els It's also good to see that Els is healthy this year, and his scores show what he is capable off on the Serapong Course when he isn't doubled over in pain. Last year, and the year before, he suffered from severe food poisoning which probably contributed to his lacklustre results. He probably stayed away from the oyster omelettes and char kway teow this time round, bringing on the birdies and the potential that the three-time Major winner is capable of. Els will always have a special place in the heart of Golf Digest Singapore. For despite a debilitating illness in 2007, he dragged himself to the magazine's launch at Vivocity and answered questions like the trooper he is. In our celebrity-obsessed world, it is all too easy for someone of his fame and fortune to ignore the lesser people, but he proved that his star continues to shine bright and strong by standing by his word. Not only did Els show up for the interview session with Golf Digest Singapore editor Ju K. Tan, New Paper editor Godfrey Robert and ESPN/Star Sports anchorman Alan Wilkins, but he also stayed long enough to sign autographs and mingle before retiring to his hotel. It can be said that no golfer is bigger than the game. But Els is one player that is as big as they come, whichever way you look at it.
