The Art of Putting
Scotty Cameron putters have become more than just another golf club in the bag. Many have become collectors items that hold their value years after they were launched. The new California and Studio Select ranges are two lines that aficionados might want to keep an eye on.
The Scotty Cameron California range replaces the Circa 62 line and boasts the Select Technology that allows the balancing of putter head weight with shaft length. The California – available in four models: Sonoma (compact mallet with plumbing neck hosel), Coronado (blade with double-step flange, flow neck with half-shaft offset), Del Mar (heel-shafted, toeheavy mid mallet) and Monterey (blade with plumbing neck and full-shaft offset) – are precision milled from soft 303 stain less steel and are fitted with circular weights in the heel and toe to allow each model to be offered at lengths of 33, 34, and 35 inches, as well as 34-inch H and 35-inch H for heavier weight configurations.
California putters can be further customised by adjusting the lie +/- two degrees off the standard 71 degrees. The uniqe “Honey Dipped” finish is a distinguishing feature that comes from a heat-treat process and works to reduce glare.
While most people would rather not tamper with a good thing, Titleist took feedback from tour players, and tweaked the Studio Select line of Scotty Cameron putters. The 2009 Studio Select (S$645 from authorised dealers) includes three new models – Newport 2.5 (flow neck with half-shaft offset), Squareback 2 (modified Newport-style mid mallet with plumbing neck hosel and full-shaft offset)and Fastback 1.5 (rounded back flange with flow neck and half-shaft offset). These will replace the current Newport 1.5, Newport 2.7 and Fastback 1.
