Getting Prepared

As said by Natalie Gulbis in an interview, golf is often an individual sport. The aim of golf is to get the ball into the hole with the lowest number of strokes, using nothing but your own abilities. Unlike football or basketball, you cannot rely on your team mates to carry you to victory should you have a bad day. Furthermore in a highly competitive professional golf tournament, the difference can be tens of thousands in prize money between victor and runner up. In other words, there’s nothing for a golfer to gain by helping out another with his or her game. That was why I thought that it was very gracious to see Feng Shanshan giving our local qualifier Joey Poh plenty of sound advice today during their practice round.

During their press conference, the top Chinese women golfer spoke positively about Joey’s maturity and her approach to the game. Joey also expressed her gratitude to Shanshan, thanking her for her advice and encouragement. There’s a nice synergy about them and it’ll be great if they are paired together during the tournament. You can check out the entire press conference right here at our microsite. There’s also the press conference by Yani Tseng, who talked about how she overcame pressure and got back her form especially during the later part of 2009. She is looking forward to the HSBC Women’s Champions and will try to have lots of fun on the golf course.

Talking about the HSBC Women’s Champions, it will be starting in a couple of days and the entire clubhouse at Tanah Merah Country Club is buzzing with activities. The organizers are putting the final touches to the golf course and it looks like it is going to be a great event.

This year, the media centre is right in the midst of the action, beside the 18th green! Last year, the media centre was located at the tennis courts – an obscure and inaccessible place. So, thank you organisers, from taking good care of us media folks. I’ll be bringing you the action straight from the course via our website and Facebook fan page. Log on daily for updates, news, videos and interviews of the LPGA stars!
