Laguna National Youth Golf Charity Open
Back to school

To borrow a tag line from one of the key sponsors, Accenture, the 15th Laguna National Youth Golf Charity
Open 2009 held on November 14, 2009, was “High performance. Delivered.” This year’s annual fundraiser raised more than S$200,000 for the Laguna National’s community Youth Golf Programme (YGP). In its 12th
year at Laguna National, the YGP adoptS schools and teach students to play golf along with its life values. More than 4,000 students from 15 schools (11 schools this year) have been through the programme.

In keeping with the spirit and brand of another sponsor, The Cocoa Trees, the golf tournament was a candy-coloured, fun affair. The four-coloured quadrant golf shirt offered as a door gift for the 250 golfers promoted the cheerful atmosphere. Although heavy rain threatened the mood before the tournament, the all-clear-to-play was given sharp on shotgun tee-off time in the afternoon. The team format of play - System 36, Stableford, Best Ball - encouraged teamwork and was ideal for the social tournament. Golfers were seen to encourage their flight mates as they went for birdies.

Since the Charity Open is aid of our YGP, the theme for dinner was “back to the school days”. Many of the guests, members and staff were very sporting and came dressed in school outfits. Some borrowed their children’s school uniforms. Others took the trouble to buy pinafores. There was a group led by Ladies Vice Captain Wendy Lim, who dressed like Japanese students: chequered skirts and knee high stockings. The banquet department did their part by decorating the ballroom complete with tuck shop styled food stalls.
They even had a man in a sarong offering kachang puteh.

The YGP students did their part too: They helped with the golf event in particular the novelty holes where they sold raffle tickets and at the halfway house where they served drinks and fruits. At the evening event, three VJC students played and sang for the guests. Jonathan Soong, a YGP student from St Gabriel’s
Secondary School wrote and delivered a very personal thank you speech.
