The pirates’ ship sailed in on March 13, creating much chaos on the grounds of Keppel Club. Private cars that drove in were ambushed. Many commoners surrendered themselves, while some retaliated, but all went by unharmed. The “pirates act” was the theme of this year’s “We Care” golf game to inject the element of fun while instilling the important message of caring for the course. The game started with the Gotong Royong tradition whereby the golfers walked one hole forward to their tee-off point and along the way, recovered damage by repairing ball marks and divots or raking the bunkers, before starting the game proper. The evening’s programme began as members who found the “green pearls” (green golf balls) on the course during the day were rewarded with prizes. Uncovering the “green pearls” was evidence that they did their part in caring for the golf course as these were hidden in the bunkers and sand pits where members refilled their sand canisters. After Club Captain John Tan gave his speech, a video clip introducing the 12 ambassadors was screened. Dramatically greeted by three “cannon shots”, these individuals were escorted into Keppel Hall by the marshals and the two golf pros, Greg Anketell and Joey Gaughwin. The ambassadors were selected over a period of four months by the marshals who observed and singled out members who consistently demonstrated good golf etiquette. While Brazilian barbecue dinner was being served with free flow of beer, merry-making continued as the emcee, Edwin Raj, entertained members with fun quizzes, table games and a funny skit acted by spontaneous members.
