Longest Drive Family Carnival 2009
A great distance driven

The golfing haven of Batam hosted the inaugural Longest Drive Family Carnival. Co-organised by Rinuva Golf Academy, Batam View Beach Resort, Tering Bay Golf and Country Club and Fusion Excel, golfers from around the region descended onto the island’s north-east coast to enjoy a weekend of revelry and competition.

The two-day event started with a golf clinic and exhibition conducted by Jean Daniels, a 14-time world long-drive champion.

Apart from offering tips on how to hit it further, he exhibited the various and whimsical ways of hitting the ball, such as using a club with a bicycle chain as a shaft and while on his knees.

There was also a long drive competition. But tried as they could, nobody – not even the winner – could get near the mark set by Daniels. The penultimate event was the one-round golf competition at the Tering Bay Golf and Country Club.

Ng Ah Hock won the tournament with a gross score of even-par 72. The Singapore Consul to Batam, Mr R Raj Kumar, presented the prizes.

The event was not without a cause. Part of the proceeds went to charity.
