Singapore Island Country Club hosted the 18th Junior Invitational Golf Championship on December 15 to 17, 2009. The much-anticipated tournament attracted many competitors from the region and beyond and was most famously won by LPGA star Yani Tseng eight years ago. This year, 124 boys and girls vied for top honours.

Thai wonderboy Poom Saksasin took top honours after carding in 70-71-74 for a three stroke victory over Singaporean Gregory Foo. Poom, who has won many regional tournaments such as the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship, was expectedly happy after emerging victorious amidst a very tough field.

“During the final round, the rain made it very difficult for me to read my putts. But luckily, my scores over the first were sufficient to win this tournament,” says Poom,  through a translator.

As a slight consolation, SICC member Gregory Foo won the LION Cup, a title for the best Singaporean boy golfer of the tournament.

Malaysia-born-Australian Angie Yang won the girls’ event, though she started the tournament disastrously with a six-over 78. But she rallied in the later rounds to win the overall championship.

“I found the greens rolling a lot more here compared to Australia. So, I had to adjust quickly and thankfully, everything worked out.”

Angie’ shot consecutive two-under 70s to beat Irina Paulin from the Philippines by two strokes.

Joey Poh and Edgar Oh gave the home crowd something to cheer as they won the A division girls’ title and B division boys’ title respectively.

“I felt good about my game during the second nine of the third round and tried to score at every hole,” says Edgar. The 15-year was rewarded with two consecutive birdies at the 17th and 18th, en route to his win over Chawit Taeprajit from Thailand.
