2010 OPEN C'SHIP DAY THREE: CAN YOU SAY OOSTHUIZEN?

Saturday, 17 July, 2010 - It was moving day, but the only thing that was really moving was Louis Ooisthuizen up the leaderboard. The young South African who came out of nowhere to take the lead in this 150th Open Championship proved that he is the real deal when his 15-under total after 54 holes kept him ahead of the pack. Paul Casey kept is hopes alive by shooting a wonderful -5-under 67 to stay within shot of his first major.

-----------------------------------------------

While the throngs in St Andrews await the crowning of its 2010 champion, other golfers in the tournament have their own battles to contend with. Rory McIlroy dragged himself out of the doldrums of his second-round 80 with a solid 69, despite hitting over the green on his second shot at the dastardly 17th. He was playing with partner Camillo Villegas in a flight that probably had teenage girls tagging along with tongues dragging on the ground.

--------------------------------------

Malaysia's Danny Chia probably had a sleepless night on Friday when he wasn't sure to pack his bags or practice. He sat on the cut, and relied on at least one player, from the group who had to finish their second round on Saturday, falling out to determine whether he would play in the weeend.

The player did, and Danny Chia could let out a sigh of relief. With that, Danny became the only Malaysian to make the halfway cut at the British Open (or any major, actually). "It's great to make history for Malaysian golf. It feels really good," says the Asian Tour player. "I woke up at six (on Saturday) to check on the scores and noticed players were dropping shots. I think I have surpassed myself. It was the most satisfying Open campaign for me."

-------------------------------------------

Like last year at Turnberry, 2010 saw its slew of 'old guys' come to the fore. Tom Lehman (left), and Mark Calcavecchia, both at 2-under for the tournament, showed some kick in their middle-aged legs, which only goes to prove that you're only as old as your wives are.

------------------------------------------

With the large greens, and Tiger changing his putter just before the Open, putting is the feature de jeur this week. Our man inside the ropes spied K.J. Choi (is he in disguise here with his rain suit even though the skies were clear??) trying out a rather different putting strokes at the practice green next to the third fairway. If this isn't grasping for straws, I don't know what is.

Maybe he should pull a Tiger and just change his putter instead.
